Maastricht University rises to top 10 ranking among young universities
Maastricht University has made it into the top 10 of the Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 Ranking. In the 2nd edition of this special ranking for young universities UM rose from 19th to 6th place. This reflects UM’s dramatic rise in the THE World University Rankings 2012-2013, where UM rose an impressive 82 places to the 115th position.
The rise in both rankings was due largely to a better reputation score, to good scores in the percentage of international staff and students, and to research quality, including number of scientific citations.
In his analysis, Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education wrote the following: “The overall World University Rankings continue to highlight the strength of the Dutch higher education system, with 12 of its research universities making the world top 200. But this table highlights one truly remarkable performer: Maastricht University. Founded as recently as 1976, it has jumped dramatically into the 100 Under 50 top 10 – reflecting its steady rise up the traditional rankings, too. It is another sign of Dutch higher education’s strength in depth.”
The 2013 THE 100 Under 50 uses the same comprehensive list of 13 rigorous and extensive performance indicators that underpin the THE World University Rankings, but employs a specially recalibrated methodology (developed in consultation with experts) to better capture the characteristics of young institutions. The THE rankings are based on the world’s largest reputation survey conducted by Thomson Reuters in collaboration with 16,600 experienced academics.
